3canal excited to be part of new local film

In the midst of performances, planning and conceptualising its 2011 artistic ventures, rapso super group 3Canal made an appearance in the new Trinbago film, Seventeen Colours and a Sitar. The renowned trio of Wendell Manwarren, Roger Roberts, and Stanton Kewley expressed joy at being a part of this new film endeavour, which also features visual arts phenomenon Rex Dixon and Trinidad’s celebrated sitarist Mungal Patasar. At the recent opening of Dixon’s art gallery exhibition the three “rapsonians” praised the work of their directors, co-stars and all involved for their unique film experience. Roberts, who admitted to not having much exposure to painting outside of using paint for J’ouvert festivities, was glad to have been given an opportunity to tap into another side of his creativity and to experiment with the paint.

Manwarren said he enjoyed seeing his bandmates become imaginative with the paint, and to be able to share this with them. “Coming from the theatre where everything is scripted and we have to adopt a character, this experience was different and challenging at the same time. It was amazing to see what the paint brought out of us and where it led us.” The scene shared by 3 Canal and Rex Dixon evoked an organic occurrence where the worlds of music and painting collided in a harmonious and natural manner. In addition to their newfound knowledge, abilities and appreciation for painting, 3Canal believes the film will stand out based on its content, as well as its intent, and due to the fact that it possesses an uncommon yet distinctive theme and approach.

3Canal is currently making a statement with the Music Liberation Front initiative, which is a vehicle and a platform for the promotion and proliferation of T&T’s indigenous musical expression. Group member Stanton Kewley said, “We as a nation need to liberate the arts by supporting our own productions whether it may music or film. Free the arts!” The film Seventeen Colours and a Sitar is part of the 2010 Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival, and will air on October 1 at 3 pm at MovieTowne in Port of Spain, and at 4 pm at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine.

3canal to “do” Yoga

In celebration of their 5^th Anniversary Moksha Yoga Trinidad [MYT] will give thanks this Saturday at Aura on Cipriani Boulevard. Joining the party again this year will be 3canal and the cut clear crew live as well as artistes Ataklan and Nigel Rojas. Describing this event as a way of “giving back for all the blessings” Karen Blackman, owner of MYT [pronounced-mighty] welcomes the public to enjoy the evening, and consequently tickets are reasonably priced at $25 at the door. The party starts at 9:00 pm.

Right now there is an impending dread, a fear of something brewing, something bubbling just beneath the surface, just waiting to bus’, to erupt, to explode, to happen... As we enter our so-called “20 year” cycle of social upheaval. DOH FRAID yuh power: JAM-IT!

3canal invites you to a glimpse of the story of the post-emancipation Jamet Carnival and Canboulay that was born in the barackyards, back-a -yards, and gayelles, an unstoppable celebration of Life, Love Liberté.

2010 heralds the dawn of another turn of the cycle”¦ Another chance to give thanks and praise”¦ Another opportunity to boom up history once again and connect to the root of the vibe of the Ritual Celebration of Freedom and Expression of Self that is Jouvay/Canboulay.

A chance once again to make a statement, to celebrate life, to claim a space and make a stage and say Look Meh! That’s right, this is it! This the moment in time we live for, a space and a time to dream and be whatever yuh want to be, a space and time once again to liberate yuh body and free up yuh mind in the spirit of those who came before and paved the way for we to celebrate today Jouvay/Canboulay.

Today we call down the Jamet spirit of resistance and persistence in the face of systemic oppression and suppression of expression of self by the Imperious Powers that be at the time in an attempt to snuff out the Canboulay entirely.

Today we BOOM UP the HISTORY of the Jamet Carnival and Canboulay!

“It was the Jamet power in the Jamet Carnival, the Jamet bands, the Jamet man and woman, Stickman, Dunois and Matadors who band together and stop fighting one another and instead fight the unjust laws of the imperious powers that be, in the form of Captain Baker on that Glorious Canboulay Morning 1881; until they back back and say “O.K. play yuhself but behave yuhself!”

“In the second half of the 19th century Carnival was dominated by the rituals of stickfighting and Canboulay and from the 1860’s for the next 20 years it becomes the Jamet Carnival. The Jamette from the French ”˜diametre’- the other half i.e. the Underworld...”

The “Jamette” Carnival
“Around the 1860’s the Carnival came to have a distinct character; the ”˜Jamette’ carnival. The jamettes who were the band members were the singers, dancers, stickmen, prostitutes, pimps and ”˜bad johns’ in general. They boasted of their skill and bravery, verbal wit, talent in song, dance and drumming, their indifference to the law, their sexual prowess, their familiarity with jail, and sometimes their contempt for the church. In short they reversed canons of respectability, the norms of the superstructure....”

Jamet Bands
“The term currently signifies a prostitute, but as used in Carnival it meant the underworld in general. Jamet women were said to be ”˜matadors’ or retired prostitutes gone respectable, were understandably always masked. They wore beautiful dresses of the traditional douillette type with many starched and embroidered petticoats over which their skirts were draped and caught up with belts. Their male counterpart, the jamet man (currently ”˜sweet man’) had trousers of serge or flannel worn low over the hips, and held up by two belts or rope or leather from which hung brightly coloured silk kerchiefs and ribbons. They also wore brightly coloured silk shirts unbuttoned to display the chains and gold jewelry around their necks.”

Canboulay
“One notable feature of the Jamette carnival was the Canboulay. This was a procession of men, usually masked, carrying lighted torches and staves which started at midnight on Sunday and continued Monday morning. It was accompanied by a great deal of drumming, hooting, singing and shouting which kept everyone awake. Canboulay was also seen - correctly - as a powerful symbol of Afro-Creole resistance to European culture norms.”

Canboulay Riots
“In an attempt to halt the pitched battles fought by rival bands during the Carnival period, the Canboulay procession was declared illegal. The Canboulay clash achieved two important results: the government was forcibly aware of the importance of the Carnival and the importance of it as a license reversing values”¦ and secondly, police intervention prompted new social groups to identify themselves as the ”˜people’ and with Carnival as the ”˜people’s’ festival.”

The Aftermath
“After the breakup of the Jamette gangs, the working class channeled more energy and aggression into what eventually became calypso and steelband, and the masquerade fell back into the hands of its progenitors the upper and middle classes.”

Carnival has attained the status of a tourist attraction, steelbands and calypsonians have won praise from overseas and many of the traditional, African elements of Carnival has disappeared. All has become cleaner and much more respectable. The coloured (middle class) people have not yet grasped the fact that it is the craftsmanship, artistry, and inventiveness of the lower class, which has given Carnival it’s wider appeal as a special attraction of Trinidad.”

JPF Award Nominations for 3canal

3canal's album 3:10 and the single "And so it Goes" have been nominated in the Caribbean Album & Song categories of the JPF [Just Plain Folks] Awards. http://www.jpfolks.com/default.php?page=awards#

JPF is a community of over 51,500 Songwriters, Recording Artists, Music Publishers, Record Labels, Performing Arts Societies, Educational Institutions, Recording Studios and Engineers, Producers, Legal Professionals, Publicists and Journalists, Publications, Music Manufacturers and Retailers and about every other type of member of the Music Industry.

They host to the world’s largest independent music awards.

"And so it Goes" from the Album 3:10 was penned by Stanton Kewley and produced by Samuel Jack in 2007. That year was the first year that each member of the group sang solo leads on any recording.
The other two solos, "Carni.vale" and "Trouble" can also be found the 3:10 Album.

3canal has joined forces with Amnesty International in their efforts to spread the Global recognition of Human Rights. In the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Amnesty's has called on artists and people to Think Globally Act Locally. 3canal has answered the call and have designated their upcoming concert "ReThePublic" as a Small Places Tour Event.
